The school band’s mission is to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment, and an opportunity for students to challenge their intellectual and creative abilities. This in turn enables them to meet their full potential as citizens through music making in an ensemble setting.
Rehearsals and Practice Expectations
Music is a disciplined art. It is very important for all members to understand and follow the rehearsal procedures, practicing and performing regulations in order to create a safe and comfortable learning environment for a well disciplined ensemble. The members of the ensembles are expected to demonstrate ensemble spirit, equipment care, personal preparation and musical self-discipline.
The following skills are taught in the band program:
- Music making: Students learn how to keep time, hear pitch, and control musical expression through creative group projects.
- Music reading: Students study the basics of musical notation and develop the sense of rhythm through games, written assignments and making music from percussion and recorders.
- Group work: Students develop the ability to work cooperatively and democratically in a group, building on the ideas of shared work, empathy, and mutual support.
Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents. – Ludwig van Beethoven
